GMAT Eligibility Criteria

There is no specific eligibility criterion to be able to write the GMAT. Since the exam is used for admissions to various MBA/ Management programs around the world, what you need to check is your eligibility for the MBA program you’re applying for. The GMAT eligibility criteria for admissions may vary for every MBA or Management course. Some management programs may require you to have a certain number of years of work experience, while others may not. So before you register for GMAT, please ensure that you fulfill all other parameters that would allow your selection into your chosen program.

  • There is no upper age limit to appear for this exam. For the minimum age limit, GMAC has defined that the candidates need to be at least 18 years. However, it has been reported that aspirants that fall in the age group of 13 to 17 are also allowed to attempt the exam given that they have a written approval or consent provided by their legal guardians or parents.It is advisable that college final year students and those who have completed college write the GMAT, as the GMAT score is used for admission into postgraduate management programs in India and across the world. 
  • The GMAT exam is designed to be attempted in English; hence basic understanding and fluency in the language is a must for the aspirants. In order to clear the exam, one must have the skills to comprehend the twisted and confusing questions asked in the exam. The exam is tough and complicated; henceforth, its aspirants must have excellent command over the English language.

  • According to the GMAC, any individual irrespective of their gender, age, nationality, religion, academic background, etc. can appear for the exam without any discrimination. This includes differently-abled candidates as well, who are provided with special exam accommodation upon request. For such aspirants, the medical documents that define a candidate’s disability are put confidential, which has been thoroughly described in the privacy statement declared by the GMAC.
  • It is advisable that the test takers appearing for GMAT should have graduated from a recognized university. There are a lot of GMAT test takers who are working professionals. From the data analyzed by the GMAC, it is seen that the top business schools prefer all those candidates who have work experience. Mostly students from the final year of bachelors appear for GMAT.

  • To appear for GMAT, there are no cut off marks to appear for GMAT. In all the top business schools of the USA or UK, GMAT score is considered as an admission requirement. Before appearing for the exam, test takers should know the different GMAT score bands for business schools.
  • There are a few conditions that apply to the number of attempts you can take at the GMAT. These are listed below:
    • You can take the GMAT once every 16 calendar days
    • You may NOT take more than 5 attempts in a 12-month period
    • You may NOT take more than 8 attempts in a lifetime
    • If you score a GMAT 800, which is the highest possible score, you must wait for at least 5 years for your next attempt
