IELTS Reading
You will be allowed 1 hour to complete all 3 sections of the IELTS Academic or General Reading test. The IELTS reading test is different for IELTS Academic and IELTS General. Both the General and Academic Reading tests are 60 minutes long. There are 40 questions that need to be attempted in 60 minutes. Each correct answer receives 1 mark. IELTS General Reading: Section details
- IELTS Reading Section 1 contains two or three short factual texts. There can be standalone texts or composite texts. The topics will be from common happenings, events etc.
- IELTS Reading Section 2 contains two short factual texts. The topics are generally procedures, policies etc.
- IELTS Reading Section 3 contains one long, relatively complex text. However it is on a general topic.
IELTS Academic Reading: Section Details
There are three sections and each section contains one long text. Texts can be from newspapers, books, journals, magazines, editorials etc. However they will not generally require any specific skillset or background and are written for a general audience. If there is a technical text or concept an explanation/glossary is provided.
High school graduates, undergraduate candidates or postgraduate candidates will not face any difficulty in understanding the content. The texts can be descriptive/factual/inferential/analytical. They may also contain shapes, figures, graphs, diagrams, graphs, illustrations etc.

IELTS Reading: Instructions to candidates
In the actual test the following instructions are presented to candidates:
- Do not open this question paper until you are told to do so
- Write your name and candidate number in the spaces at the top of the page
- Read the instructions for each part of the paper carefully
- Answer all the questions
- Write your answers on the answer sheet; use a pencil
- You must complete the answer sheet within the time limit
- At the end of the test you will be asked to hand in both the question paper and your answer sheet.
Computer based IELTS Reading test
There is no difference in the content, format or level of difficulty and scoring of the computer based IELTS reading test. The type of questions asked, thus, remain the same as in the paper-based test. It is however always better to be well versed with the computer format and it helps if you practice with the computer-delivered format of the test.

Read the following text and answer questions 1-8.
In cases of an emergency landing of an aircraft passengers must find the nearest exit door. The floor of the aircraft will have illuminated exit marks for pointing towards the emergency doors. Warning of evacuation will be through short shrill alarm rings as well. In the event of a power failure, this may be a hand-held bell or siren. The passengers must unfasten the seat belts immediately and leave their bags and other possessions where they are. Passengers should vacate the aircraft using the nearest exit. The passengers must walk briskly but not run and ensure that they do not push the other passengers. Under the crew’s supervision the passengers must move in an orderly manner to the nearest safe assembly area. The airhostess is supposed to take a headcount of the evacuated passengers. Both the crew and the passengers must follow the instructions of the Captain Each airhostess must sends a count to the Captain to report whether all passengers have been accounted for. The captain in turn will inform the airline office or the emergency services when all crew and passengers have been accounted for. All passengers, crew and other personnel must remain in the evacuation area until a command for dispersion is given by the relevant authorities. The dispersion command will be a voice command over the loudspeaker.
