Canada Scholarships: Canada Educational Setup

Before applying to any of the scholarships, it is important to first understand the education system check the eligibility criteria, deadlines and much more. In Canada Universities are generally degree granting institutions. The degrees (Bachelor, Masters and Doctoral) are granted across diverse programs – these programs vary by universities. Typically, most Canadian Universities are members Universities Canada. Their website provides a list of the Canadian universities. An undergraduate degree program lasts between 3-5 years depending on the program. A Masters level program is 2 years in length. A doctoral level degree is minimum 4 years.

Community Colleges on the other hand are diploma and certificate granting institutions. These institutions focus on vocational education. Some colleges also provide applied program degrees. Typically, Community Colleges in Canada are members of the Association of Community Colleges of Canada (ACCC). The ACCC website provides a list of the Canadian Community Colleges. A post-secondary diploma or degree program lasts between 2-4 years. A postgraduate diploma lasts between 1-2 years.

1. Canada Scholarships (Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship)

The Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship is open to international students who wish to study doctoral courses in various fields at Canadian educational institutions. Candidates must be chosen by a Canadian Institution with a quota at which they want to study. Students cannot apply directly to the Vanier CGS. Either the student contacts the faculty of graduate studies at the institution they intent to apply to the Vanier CGS OR the institution initiates the nomination process by contacting the candidate. The scholarship was created to attract world-class doctoral students to establish Canada as a global center of excellence in research and higher learning. The scholarships are awarded for a doctoral degree or combined MA/Ph.D. or MD/Ph.D. The scholarship amount totals $50,000 CAD per year for a duration of three years.  Students interested in pursuing doctoral courses in the areas of health research, national sciences, social sciences, engineering research, or humanities research study in Canada at a participating university may apply for this scholarship. The university awards up to 167 scholarships annually. Note that only the PhD portion of any combined degree is eligible for funding. You must have achieved a first-class average, as determined by your institution, in each of the last 2 years full-time study or equivalent. 2. Canada Scholarships (Ontario Graduate Scholarship Program)

The Ontario Graduate Scholarship program is funded by the provincial government to encourage excellence in graduate studies at the master’s and doctoral levels. These scholarships are extended to Indian and international students. These are available to graduate students in a wide variety of disciplines As a pre-requisite to applying, students must accept an offer from a university in Ontario and obtain a valid study permit Ontario Graduate Scholarships. The scholarship is worth CAD 15,000 i.e. INR Rs 7,77,900. The scholarship amount can be utilized for Tuition and Fees. Number of students to be awarded are 5 annually. The candidate should be registered at full-time graduate degree program; exceptions are those students who only register part-time as permanent disabilities may still be eligible. The candidate should have achieved a first-class with a minimum average of 80%. Applicant must indicate relevant volunteer, leadership and academic work experience. 2 LORs along with transcripts are also required.

3. Canada Scholarships (Ontario Trillium Scholarship)

The Ontario Trillium Scholarship is intended for postgraduates from around the world who want to pursue a doctorate degree in Ontario, Canada. Ontario Trillium Scholarship program aims to attract more of the best qualified international students to Ontario for their PhD studies. A total of seven scholarships are awarded every year. Each scholarship offers $40,000 CAD per year to cover tuition and other expenses for a period of four years. The scholarship can be renewed for an additional three years, if merited. Recipients must be international students, who hold a valid Canadian study permit and must be intending to pursue full-time graduate studies at the doctoral level in a degree granting program. 4. Canada Scholarships (UBC International Leader of Tomorrow Award)

Merit-based Canadian scholarships to study at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, open to undergraduate students who demonstrate leadership skills and exceptional academic achievement. The Award is offered by the University of British Columbia for international students applying to their undergraduate courses. Students who hold an outstanding academic record, and have achievements in the field of Sports, Performing Arts, Debating, etc. are encouraged to apply. A student (only non-Canadian students are eligible) needs to be nominated by the school which s/he currently attends. It should be the student’s first undergraduate degree, and the student should meet all requirements for English Language as well as the program applied for. The student should also demonstrate financial need that would prevent them from pursuing a program of their choice. The scholarship is given based on financial need, and an assessment is made by the university about the financial situation of the candidate. The scholarship can cover tuition fee, as well as living expenses. The Award can be renewed for all three years of undergraduate study provided the student display satisfactory academic performance and financial need. The scholarship can be availed by any student who has been admitted to UBC in any undergraduate program. The deadline to complete applications is November for sessions starting the next year. 5. Canada Scholarships (Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute)

11. Canada Scholarships (University of Manitoba Graduate Fellowships (UMGF))

The University of Manitoba Graduate Fellowships (UMGF) are merit-based awards that are open to all students irrespective of their citizenship provided he/she is a registered as full-time graduate students (Masters or PhD) at the University of Manitoba. However, those students pursuing an MBA or those in the College of Medicine are ineligible for this particular fellowship. The scholarship is valued at $18,000 (PhD) and $14,000 (Master’s) for a 12-month period. Students are eligible to receive fellowships for the first 24 months of their Master’s program and the first 48 months of their PhD program. The fellowship funds are available to students in all fields of graduate study so long as their program is eligible for tri-council funding. Students are eligible to receive the UMGF during the first 24 months of their master’s program and the first 48 months of their doctorate program. The maximum duration of monetary support for an individual graduate student is 48 months. Students with a minimum GPA of 3.75 (above B+) in each of the last two years of study at a recognized university based on a Bachelor, Master’s Graduate Diploma or a Doctoral Degree are eligible.

12. Canada Scholarships (University of Waterloo International Master’s and Doctoral Awards)

International Master’s (IMSA) and International Doctoral Student Awards (IDSA) are open to international students with valid Study Permit and who are enrolled full-time in research-based graduate degree programs at the University of Waterloo. Eligible students must be enrolled full-time in research-based graduate degree programs at the University of Waterloo and hold a valid Canadian study permit. It is valued at $2,045 per term for 2 years (Master’s) or $4,090 per term for 3 years (PhD)

13. Canada Scholarships (Trudeau Foundation Scholarships)

The Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation doctoral scholarships are in the fields of humanities and social sciences. Students, who are enrolled full-time and in their first or second year (or in the process of enrolling) of a doctoral program in the Humanities and Social Sciences, are eligible. Students must be recommended by a Canadian or any foreign university. Applications sent directly by any student will be automatically declined by the Foundation. Each year, up to fifteen scholarships are awarded to Canadian and foreign doctoral candidates. The total annual value is up to $60,000 per scholar for a maximum of three years. $40,000 per year for 3 years $20,000 per year for 3 years, as research and travel allowance. Up to one student in four per given year may be a foreign national enrolled full-time in a doctoral program at a particular Canadian institution. 14. Canada Scholarships (UBC Graduate Global Leadership Fellowships)

This Canada scholarship is aimed at master’s and PhD students at the University of British Columbia, including the university’s four-year doctoral fellowships and Graduate Support Initiative. Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships are offered by the Canadian government to international students undertaking postgraduate study within the natural and social sciences or health research. 70 fellowships are awarded annually; a total of up to 140 awards are active at any time. 16. Canada Scholarships (Canada Graduate Scholarships – Master’s Program)

18. Canada Scholarships (International Leader of Tomorrow Award)

International Leader of Tomorrow Award is open for international undergraduate students with brilliant academic record, leadership skills, and regular participation in student affairs and community service at The University of British Columbia. The value of the award is proportional to the student’s financial need decided by summing up the tuition, fees, and living costs, and subtracting the financial contribution by the student and the family.

19. Canada Scholarships (Humber University scholarships for international students)

24. Canada Scholarships (Aga Khan Academy Renewable Scholarship)

Aga Khan Academy Renewable Scholarship is open to an international student from an Aga Khan Academy with an outstanding academic, community service and leadership record. Scholarship amount of CAD 90,000 will be paid over four years of study for a student entering an undergraduate program at the University of Victoria. Izaak Walton Killam Memorial Scholarship is open to international students registered in or acceptable to a doctoral program with an outstanding academic record. 53. Canada Scholarships (Conrad Family Scholarships for Master’s in Business, Entrepreneurship and Technology (MBET) program)

Several scholarships valued are provided annually to graduate students registered full time in the Master of Business and Entrepreneurships and Technology (MBET) program in the Conrad Business, Entrepreneurship and Technology Centre in the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Waterloo. Preference will be given to Canadian Citizens or permanent residents. However, exceptional international applicants may also be considered. Applicants will be selected by a departmental committee on the basis of their entrepreneurial orientation, quality of their business plan, and record of academic achievement. 54. Canada Scholarships (Devani Charities Graduate Engineering Entrance Scholarship)

A scholarship awarded annually to a graduate student registered full time in the first year of a thesis-based Master’s program in the Faculty of Engineering. The scholarship will be awarded on the basis of scholastic excellence (minimum 1st class cumulative average required in the last program completed). Preference will be given to International student who previously received a formal education in India. It is valued at $1,500. The Faulty of Engineering will identify candidates and select recipients each Fall. A scholarship application is not required.

55. Canada Scholarships (Hira and Kamal Ahuja International Graduate Scholarship)

This scholarship is provided annually to a full-time graduate student with a valid Canadian study permit enrolled in the Masters or Doctoral program in the Faculty of Engineering on the basis of academic excellence (minimum 80%). Preference is be given to students who either completed their undergraduate degree at Thapar University in Punjab or graduated from an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) and who have been living in India. The scholarship is valued at $20,000.

56. Canada Scholarships (Jensen Hughes Graduate Fire Safety Award)

This scholarship is provided annually to a graduate student enrolled in the Master’s of Engineering (MEng) degree, Master of Applied Science (MASc) or Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programs in Mechanical and Mechatronics Engineering in the Faculty of Engineering on the basis of academic achievement (minimum 80%) combined with a proven interest in and involvement in fire safety research. Preference will be given to those students not already employed in the fire safety industry. The scholarship is valued at $4000.

57. Canada Scholarships (Kevin Kimsa MBET Graduate Scholarship)

The Kevin Kimsa MBET Graduate Scholarship is given to an eligible recipient entering the Master of Business, Entrepreneurship and Technology (MBET) program.  The recipient will be selected by the MBET admissions committee based on previous academic accomplishments and the ability to demonstrate, during an interview process, the entre(intra)preneurial attributes required to successfully complete the program. The scholarship is valued at $10,000 per year.

58. Canada Scholarships (Neelanjana Pal Memorial Scholarship)

A scholarship valued at $3,250 will be awarded annually to a full-time graduate student registered in year two of the Master’s program in Electrical and Computer Engineering in the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Waterloo. Selection will be based on academic excellence (minimum cumulative average of 80%) and a demonstrated interest in the area of community development.

59. Canada Scholarships (Norman Esch Graduate Scholarship)

This scholarship is funded by The Esch Foundation’s Norman Esch Entrepreneurial Challenge in Engineering Fund & offered to students pursuing MBET program in University of Waterloo. Three scholarships valued at $10,000 each will be awarded annually to full-time graduate students on the basis of academic excellence (minimum overall average of 80%), and students possessing a strong entrepreneurial outlook with business concepts that have the potential to become viable businesses. Preference will be given to students with financial need. Interested students should apply with a mini-business plan submitted to the Graduate Coordinator by April 30 or June 30.

60. Canada Scholarships (Roman Baldur Memorial Engineering Award)

The scholarship will be awarded annually to a full-time University of Waterloo graduate student registered in the Department of Mechanical and Mechatronics Engineering in the Faculty of Engineering. The scholarship will be awarded to a graduate student on the basis of scholastic excellence and a demonstrated interest in innovation. It is valued at $2,520.

61. Canada Scholarships (SNC-Lavalin Graduate Scholarship in Engineering)

Four scholarships valued at $5,000 are awarded to full-time University of Waterloo graduate students in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, conducting research in the following areas of specialization: Geotechnical Engineering; Structures, Mechanics, and Construction Engineering; Transportation Engineering; or Water Resources and Environmental Engineering. The awards are to be used to match Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS) whenever possible. If this is not feasible, the scholarships will then be valued and awarded at $5,000 each. The scholarship selection will be made by the Associate Dean, Graduate Studies and International Agreements in the Faculty of Engineering.

62. Canada Scholarships (Stantec Graduate Scholarship in Civil Engineering)

A scholarship, valued at $3,000, is presented annually for five years to an outstanding student entering the first year of a postgraduate program in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. This award was established by Stantec in recognition of the on-going contribution of Stantec to engineering in Canada, and Stantec’s commitment to graduate education.

63. Canada Scholarships (Robbert Hartog Graduate Scholarship)

This scholarship has been established by Robbert Hartog who founded and was chair and CEO of Waltec Incorporated. He has actively promoted the growth and development of Canadian industry through his involvement with the Industrial Research and Development Institute (IRDI). Two or more scholarships valued at $5,000 will be awarded annually to full-time University of Waterloo graduate students in the Faculty of Engineering to students conducting research in materials or material shaping in the Department of Mechanical and Mechatronics Engineering, who hold an Ontario Graduate Scholarships (OGS).

64. Canada Scholarships (Richard and Elizabeth Madter Graduate Award in Electrical and Computer Engineering)

Richard and Elizabeth Madter, Alumni of the University of Waterloo have established two research scholarships for graduate students in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Waterloo. The students will hold an Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS) or a Queen Elizabeth II Graduate Scholarship in Science & Technology (QEII-GSST). The selection will be made by the Associate Dean, Graduate Studies in conjunction with the Department Associate Chair for Graduate Studies. The scholarship is valued at a maximum of $5,000 for 1 full award paid over 3 academic terms.

For students conducting research in the area of Information and Communications Technology (ICT), Nanotechnology, Genomics, Proteomics, Metabolomics, Transcriptomics or Regulomics

Apart from the above scholarships there TA and RA positions that allow graduate and doctoral candidates to supplement their financing:

Teaching Assistantships (TA)

TAs assist faculty members with various duties, which might include conducting labs or study groups, assisting with lecture preparation, marking assignments and tests, etc. A TA work assignment may take place outside the academic unit to which you are applying if your academic record shows strengths in other areas. Most universities offer TAs a wide range of training opportunities through a variety of offices and for which you they get paid. Though the amount varies across universities it can be tentatively valued at more than $10,000 per year. The eligibility depends on your GPA and proficiency with the subject. TA’s generally work 10 hours per week.

Research Assistantships (RA)

RAs are hired by faculty members (normally your supervisor) to assist with a research project that will be directly related to your own research. RAs are paid for with funds from the faculty member’s external contracts or research grants. The employment consists of on-campus work where you may be asked to help with the research being conducted, such as scholarly review of journals, conducting experiments, recording data, conducting interviews, etc. The guidelines for RA employment are normally determined by the agency, council or business providing the contract or grant to the faculty member
