IELTS will test you across 4 sections: Writing (task1 & task2), Reading, Listening and Speaking.
Difference Between Academic and General IELTS: Where the difference lies?
You will see difference only in 2 parts of the test i.e. Writing Task 1 and Reading. Listening, Speaking and Writing Task 2 remain the same for both General and Academic IELTS.
Writing Task 2 will be an essay which you need to answer in 40 minutes duration and count of at least 250 words.
Listening section will test with 4 audio recordings. You need to answer 40 questions between 30-40 minutes ideally.
In the Speaking section, examiner will interview you in 3 parts: minor interview, a very short presentation and a discussion. This generally ranges from 10-14 minutes.
Difference Between Academic and General IELTS: ACADEMIC IELTS: READING
This will throw at you 3 long passages. These passages will increase gradually increase in difficulty level as well. The text in these passages will be similar to what you see in journals, textbook extracts, topics of science, history, sociology etc.
ACADEMIC IELTS: WRITING TASK 1
This task will be more of analytical nature. It will ask you to describe a data given in the form of bar graph, pie chart, table, diagram, line graph. Data Interpretation skills are tested along with english writing ability.
Difference Between Academic and General IELTS: GENERAL IELTS: READING
This section will give you 4 passages. Again these may increase in length and difficulty. But the good part is the style of text will be more general, everyday articles you may witness in newspapers, magazines, travel magazines, job descriptions, notices, advertisements. Objective here is to test you on daily english level which is needed for social survival in an english speaking country.
Difference Between Academic and General IELTS:GENERAL IELTS: WRITING TASK 1
Here you will be asked to write a letter, may be informal or semi formal or totally informal. The same kind which you must have exercised during your school assignments in english. Writing a complaint, highlighting a social issue to a concerned authority, writing a letter to a family member or a distant friend etc).
