Be it Artificial Intelligence, Internet of Things, self-driven cars – all the latest technologies are based on harnessing the power of data for active machine learning. Being a computer science graduate, I too want to contribute to this growing industry further.
Coming from a modest background, I understood the paramount significance of education early on in life. This drove my fascination with technology, leading me to pursue a B.E. in Computer Engineering at Netaji Subhas Institute of Technology, University of Delhi, renowned as one of the top ten engineering colleges in India. The meticulously crafted curriculum provided a strong foundation in computer science fundamentals, while delving into advanced subjects like AI, Expert Systems, and Software Engineering offered me practical insights and application opportunities. In my junior year, I successfully secured an internship at ABC through a rigorous selection process. My performance during the internship impressed the company to the extent that they extended a Pre Placement Offer to me, solidifying my commitment to excelling in the field of computer engineering.
My work at ABC centered around Finance Technology involving warehousing of data in Trade Data Warehouse (Sybase), a multi stage processing of this data including various interest and premium calculations and ultimately generating the final ledger in Finance Data Mart (Oracle). I even successfully developed an application for users to manually insert and update their trades into the database using Oracle Application Express.
Following my tenure at ABC, I transitioned to XYZ as a Big Data Developer. Given XYZ’s status as the largest telecom player in India, the magnitude of customer data we managed was staggering. Among my accomplishments, I engineered and implemented a Query Engine to seamlessly execute joins and query data spanning over 50 Petabytes stored in our Object Storage. This involved the utilization of Presto Query Parser for parsing and optimizing SQL queries, as well as orchestrating SQL execution plans through Spark. Additionally, I devised a custom query task scheduler to facilitate scheduling beyond the framework’s predefined limits, along with the integration of unique join logic. Thanks to our efforts, the team was able to perform joins on a Petabyte-scale data set with minimal memory usage and without the need for shuffling. I also took charge of designing a federation layer, which enabled the rapid processing of OLAP queries with millisecond latency. I integrated the latest ORC with Cloudera, implementing ZSTD compression and caching ORC files in Alluxio. Leveraging Presto, our system achieved an impressive scan rate of billions of records per second, all operated on a minimal node cluster.
My current project involves writing data store for streaming key value-based system, which will provide OLAP queries over streaming data with millisecond latency. It is well known problem in industry and no single existing system works to solve this. I also wrote system to ingest trillion records per day. System writes data over to object storage. Implemented custom S3 committer to support our purpose. It is horizontally scalable system and all data is sorted with custom logic before writing. System daily receives 25 Tera byte of data.
In a country as diverse as India, technology serves as a pivotal tool for equalizing opportunities. Consider education, for example; tele-education has the potential to elevate learning outcomes and standardize education across the nation, despite the varying school curriculums in each state. It is with this vision in mind that I aim to refine my expertise through an advanced degree program. My fervor lies in Data Science and leveraging the potential of Big Data to deliver tailored solutions on a large scale. The Masters of Science in Big Data at XYZ appears to be impeccably suited for me to actualize this objective. I believe it aligns perfectly with my aspirations.
The Department of Computer Science is doing path-breaking research across fields like Data Analytics, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning and many more. The prospect of being a part of it excites me a lot as it is working towards taking advantage of all the latest advances in the field of Computer Science and opportunities that data from many data-rich environments potentially provide today. Since I deal with huge amount of confidential financial data on a daily basis, I can fully relate to the research works and understand their true potential. I am very highly impressed by the scale and variety of data related research projects at XYZ University which span over a broad spectrum of applications including Health Informatics. Moreover, the course structure is very well designed based on the current technological scenario and I feel privileged to get an opportunity to learn it.
Independence has always been a cornerstone of my character. My journey, while unconventional, has been remarkably diverse, providing me with exposure across various domains. I am of the conviction that to embark on my new learning endeavor and make a more profound impact on society, I must further refine my skills. XYZ University stands out as the ideal launchpad for this next phase of my educational journey.

Instead of reacting to equipment failures as they occur, the project adopts a proactive approach by harnessing historical operational data and applying advanced machine learning techniques.
The first step involved collecting and preprocessing a wealth of data from the industrial equipment. This data encompassed various parameters like sensor readings, temperature, vibration levels, and other critical performance indicators. The team carefully cleans, filters, and aggregates this data to ensure its quality and relevance.
Next, the project delved into feature engineering. This step involved selecting and crafting meaningful features that are essential for predicting potential equipment failures. For instance, patterns in temperature trends, unusual vibration levels, and anomaly detection metrics play a crucial role in gauging the health status of the equipment.
With the features in place, the project evaluated different machine learning algorithms to determine the most suitable model for predicting equipment failures. Techniques such as Random Forest, Support Vector Machines, and Neural Networks are tested and compared for their effectiveness.
Once a model is chosen, it undergoes rigorous training and validation. This process helped ensure that the predictive maintenance model can reliably anticipate failures based on the historical data. Techniques like cross-validation are employed to thoroughly assess the model’s performance. To bring this predictive maintenance system into real-world operation, the team integrated it with the industrial equipment’s monitoring system. This integration allows for the seamless ingestion of real-time data and its immediate analysis.
An essential component of the project was defining the thresholds for maintenance alerts. This step ensured that alerts are triggered when the model predicts an imminent failure. Fine-tuning these thresholds was crucial to strike a balance between avoiding false positives (unnecessary maintenance) and false negatives (missed alerts).
The results of this project were impressive. Over a six-month period, the predictive maintenance approach led to a remarkable 30% reduction in unscheduled downtime. Additionally, it significantly lowered maintenance costs, illustrating the tangible benefits of transitioning from reactive to predictive maintenance strategies
